How does cafeKlysm help me?

cafeKlysm has portable Internet programs and
tools to check out the computer you're using.
This way you will:

  • leave no personal information behind,
  • carry your messages, address book, bookmarks and cookies with you,
  • store and enter logon passwords safely,
  • be sure an email attachment is not a virus,
  • delete all traces of your downloads, browsing and email messages on the host computer,
  • safely eject the USB drive even if the drive is shown as locked by Windows

What's the difference?

cafeKlysm runs on:
Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008

cafeKlysm uses completely free for use and

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is the advantage of using cafeKlysm compared with just loading each individual program onto my USB flash drive?

You need a lot more clicks to launch each application if they are stored separately in folders, and you miss the "unlock and safely remove" feature in cafeKlysm, which lets you safely eject a locked USB drive. Additionally, you don't get any help documentation about avoiding identity theft in cybercafes.

  2. How is cafeKlysm different from the "PortableApps Suite" at portableapps.com?

cafeKlysm shares a few of the programs included in that suite, but PortableApps Suite's focus is not on security, so it does not contain any safe mouse keyboard, keyboard encrypter, network analysis tool or HOSTS file inspector. Also, there is no "unlock and safely remove" feature in the PortableApps Suite. Although PAS  is great for general portable program use, cafeKlysm is focused  on preserving your safety and security online.

  3. Do I need to be logged in as an administrator on the computer?

Except for the installation of KeyScrambler, all of the features of cafeKlysm are available if you are logged in as a guest or limited user.

  4.  How current are the software versions?

I try to keep the software versions of Firefox, Thunderbird and Pidgin as up-to-date as possible (as soon as portable versions are released, usually a short time after the install version release date). Check back on this page to see if a newer version of cafeKlysm is available (update check is included in the software).

  5. Is cafeKlysm spyware?

You might be surprised that very many anti-spyware applications turn out to contain spyware themselves - a good trick for exploiting insecurity, eh? There is nothing in cafeKlysm which could be even remotely described as spyware or snoopware. It installs nothing on the host computer (unless you choose to install KeyScrambler) and sends back no information about your surfing habits. It was built with AMS 7.0 runtime from Indigo Rose and contains only the applications listed above.

  6. What do you get from all this?

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donates one Euro to my bank account each time someone uses cafeKlysm. Seriously, I used many of these applications before on my trips, and wanted to share an easier way to carry and use them in Internet cafes. Plus I loathe the idea of people losing their personal information to petty criminals, and find that there is very patchy online assistance available about the ways to avoid it.

  7. {Program abc} is missing from cafeKlysm - why?

If you consider the absence of a particular program from the cafeKlysm bundle a serious oversight, let me know about it. There's no promise it can be included, however.

  8. I don't have much technical knowledge - can I still use it?

If you're a not at all a "geeky" type, get the Breeze version of cafeKlysm. This allows you to browse to your email site with a high degree of privacy and you get a simple (and secure) way to save your passwords on the USB flash drive. Also included in cafeKlysm Breeze is a very secure mouse keyboard (the built-in Windows' onscreen keyboard is no protection if someone has installed something to steal your password) plus a simple method of clearing your online browsing tracks and ejecting the drive when you are finished. Another advantage of "Breeze" is a much smaller download size compared with the full version (about a third as large).
